On Saturday, the Amherst Town Common went green for the 19th annual Extrava"ganja."
"It shows you that in a controlled environment, it can certainly be enjoyable for somebody if that's what they choose to do," says Worcester pot-lover Anthony Meija. The choice is still between right and wrong. Even though voters lowered the penalties for marijuana possession, $100 fines can still be handed out. The town of Amherst could've banked thousands Saturday, but rally day seems to be the one time cops turn their heads away from the smoke. "It's been this ambiguous thing. Some years they get tough, some years they get lenient," says Terry Franklin, a marijuana supporter. He's attended the rally for years. The rally grew to the thousands and has developed a cult following. Many from all over the state flocked for the annual outdoor convention. "Just coexist and get along and have a free spirit with an open mind to everything," Meija says. As the free spirits rise, so does the political movement. Today's rally opened the door for a new political face. Dan Melick is running for state representative. You can call him the pot candidate. "A lot of people say money grows on tree, you think money grows on pot," CBS 3 Springfield asked. "To a degree, I think it does," Melick says. The 23 year old says the potential windfalls are everywhere. And to one supporter, he has this voting bloc cornered. "They see it as an untapped source of voters. There's a lot of people who believe in this cause who are being ignored by the two mainstream parties," Franklin says. Green party gubernatorial candidate, Jill Stein was scheduled to attend the rally. Parties will be held throughout the month in three New England state capitals. http://www.420magazine.com/forums/in...pot-rally.html |
