Hey Lost fans: Haven't you wondered why the hippies who ran the Dharma Initiative never planted any weed? Horace and his buddies had all the other trappings of stoner culture, including VW vans, long hair and tunes by Three Dog Night always playing on the hi-fi. Why not some Afghan Kush to help with those long assignments out at The Swan? The climate looks perfect for growing cannabis and you can only imagine what sort of magical boost the island's soil would give to the buds. But news out of Bali today gives a hint as to why they might not have risked planting a marijuana farm -- marijuana in Indonesia (the rough locale of the island, at least initially, when Oceanic 815 crashed) is treated with the same revulsion as child pornography. Considering how adept Indonesian authorities are at sniffing out even the minutest amounts of pot, the island might not have remained a secret for long had they grown any weed on it.
It's a lesson learned all too well by Australian vacationer Robert McJannett who was unsuccessful in hiding a mere 1.7 grams of marijuana from Balinese authorities. One-point-seven grams! That's one skinny joint, and McJannett originally faced a daunting five years in prison for his meager stash. But he was polite in court and the judge cited his good manners when reducing his sentence (as well as the fact that it was clear McJannett wasn't a drug dealer. No duh). It's a good reminder to Americans who are getting used to the idea of corner pot retailers that not everywhere in the world is 420 friendly. And it's as good an explanation as any why marijuana is not featured in Lost.
