Tuesday Santa Cruz County's Grand Jury revealed their findings on a blazing topic.
They found that if marijuana were to be legalized in CA, it would make Santa Cruz county millions of dollars. "If 20 million ounces are going to be smoked annually, it might be nice to see if we can make some money on that" said Scott Keesling. The Grand Jury talked to anyone and everyone involved in marijuana. Law enforcement and medical marijuana dispensaries who are traditionally against the legalization, and even some local drug dealers. Using the state Board of Equalization's numbers, Santa Cruz will make the state close to 13 million in sales tax, and some of that will come back to the county. The Grand Jury believes the county can regulate its own distribution tax, and figures that alone will bring the county close to 7 million. Legalization of marijuana in California will be on November's ballot. In SantaCcruz County, it costs 1.36 million dollars a year to investigate, arrest and prosecute marijuana crimes.
