Default Ex-Legislator Arrested After Marijuana Raid

SALT LAKE CITY — A former state lawmaker and director of the Crossroads Urban Center was arrested this week after investigators busted what they described as a "large marijuana grow."

Jeff Fox, 62, was arrested Tuesday by Salt Lake police at his home, 149 S. Windsor. Officers serving a warrant found 16 pounds of packaged marijuana, 30 mature marijuana plants, 169 "starter" plants and psychedelic mushrooms found in the bedroom closet, according to police reports.

"During the service of a search warrant ... (Fox) physically resisted the commands of police while being taken into custody," according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

The large amount of drugs suggested cultivation and distribution of the pot plants was happening at the home, the report states.

Fox was a state representative in District 3 (northern Cache County) between 1977 and 1982. He was also a former director of the Crossroads Urban Center and one of the organizers of the first Earth Day Rally in Sugar House Park, according to one report.

Investigators say the case was also being looked at by the Drug Enforcement Administration for possible federal charges. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of felony drug possession, felony drug distribution, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and interfering with an arresting officer. He was later released to pretrial services.Citizen lobbyist Claire Geddes said Fox had been a strong voice for disadvantaged Utahns while working for the Utah Committee of Consumer Services, an organization that represents citizens in utility hearings before the Utah Public Services Commission.

"He worked for many years to maintain the independence of that committee," Geddes told the Deseret News. "I don't want this (his arrest) to be the only thing he's remembered for. He's fought very spiritively for those people in the state."
