Default Air One Spots Drug Operation In Lovejoy

Police and Sheriff's deputies were swarming through a Lovejoy neighborhood in Buffalo.

There was a lot of action on Goethe Street between 2:30 and 5:30 Monday afternoon. Someone called in a tip to police, they put Erie County's Air One helicopter into the air, which spotted this marijuana growing operation from the air.

As homeowner Jamie Gillingham was arrested, he claimed, "Medical marijuana, see? It's not a narcotic, it's a plant. Yes, it's mine. I don't even know how much is there. I had enough to make it so I didn't feel pain, didn't hurt."

35-year-old Gillingham was arrested soon after he returned home to find narcotics detectives all over the property. Police said they found marijuana plants going inside and outside the home on Goethe Street. The biggest plants were outside in a makeshift greenhouse, hidden on the sides by hanging tarps.

Neighbors tell News 4 Gillingham lives in the home with his wife and small children.

Neighbor Pamela Miszko said, "Their front window was open. Prior to this they had that silver stuff over it, and I seen the stuff in the front window and the dining room, too."

"A lot! A lot more than I've ever seen in my life! I mean, they look like Christmas trees! What is it, Christmas in July?" exclaimed Sue Strong.

Gillingham stated, "Legalize marijuana. See what happens when they're gonna legalize. They'll let me out."

Det. Alan Rozansky of the Erie County Sheriff's office said, "What he can get and what's given out by the courts is another thing. Maybe they should follow up on that. We arrest people for A1 felonies and they're out on the streets. We can't do anything about the bail and the sentencing. All we can do is arrest them and bring them to the court, and hopefully, the court sees fit to keep them in jail."

Police seized Gillingham's minivan and a few hunting shotguns. They found deer bones on the property and brought in the DEC to look into them. Gillingham will be charged with felony possession of marijuana.
