Default Police, Event Planners To Meet Over Silverdome Pot Convention

Police and organizers of a controversial pot convention planned for Halloween at the Pontiac Silverdome are scheduled to sit down Wednesday and iron out concerns about the three-day event.

Pontiac Police Chief Val Gross said he and others in law enforcement and city government were surprised to learn through an advertising flier of the International Cannabis Convention planned Oct. 29-31. Among their concerns: illegal use of marijuana and sales of smoking-related paraphernalia at the Silverdome.

"There are a lot of things to go over, but I'm trying to remain optimistic we can work everything out," Gross said.

Edmund Kresty of the Saline-based Holistic Health and Educational Center, an event organizer, stressed all city and state laws will be followed and there will be "no sales or trading" of marijuana. The flier indicated there would be "vaporization tents and edibles" for those licensed to have medical marijuana.

Since April 2009, it has been legal in Michigan for card-carrying patients to use marijuana for various ailments. Kresty said such persons would be permitted to use their "medicines" at the event.

He called the convention more of a trade show in which the laws and practices of the use of medical marijuana could be discussed. Between 25,000 and 50,000 people are expected to attend.

"We expect it will generate a lot of revenues for area restaurants, hotels and other businesses," he said.

Frances McCullough, a holistic health practitioner from West Bloomfield, called the event "very exciting."

"I'm not a user, but have clients that do. And I know people in their 70s and 80s who don't use but voted to make it legal for patients here," she said.

"It's like massage -- which had a lot of people upset at first and now you can get a massage on just about every corner. I'm interested in the various opportunities this presents -- not just for the sick, for businesses and also how to tax it."
