Lansing City Council is debating an ordinance allowing the distribution of marijuana from residential homes.
"What this means is, as an ordinance, i can have five patients come to my home. I can treat them there and deal with their questions much like a business," said Lansing City Council Member Carol Wood, Medical marijuana was approved by Michigan voters in 2008. But Wood says that statute can be confusing when it comes to implementing it. It doesnt say you can have a dispensery," said Wood, who is also chairwoman of the Public Safety Committee. "So, some people look at it and say because it doesnt address it, it means 'I can.' Some people look at it and it say because it doesnt address it, it means 'I can't' The ordinance in question will require a 1,000-foot distance from home caregivers and schools and community centers. But Mark Criss, executive director of the City Rescue Mission says that should apply to more commercial dispensory venues as well. "What we see is a lot of guests addicted to drugs and alcohol and many of them do have addictions to marijuana," Criss said. "It's just a little ironic that our next-door neighbor is dispensing some kind of marijuana. So we see the irony there, so we think the statute should include the 1,000-foot distance." Michigan Medical Marijuana opened a few weeks ago, next to Criss' City Rescue Mission. "So if they're just starting- there's already a bit of movement and traffic, then I wonder what it's going to be like in a couple more months," Criss said. Wood said the legality of such a business under the statute is something to be looked into. Representatives from the new business were unreachable.
