Default Marijuana From 'Growl-Op' Swiped

CALGARY - Marijuana RCMP say was once shielded by a platoon of B.C. bears was pilfered from a Mountie evidence locker and then booby-trapped by dynamite.

Last week, the CBC reports, RCMP said they responded to what turned out to be a phony emergency call and while they were gone, someone broke into their evidence room in Grand Forks, making off with 10 kg of pot.

Some of that marijuana had been confiscated three weeks ago from a garden of more than 1,000 plants near Christina Lake, 700 km southwest of Calgary that also turned up more than a dozen black bears who'd been fed dog food for years.

Last Thursday, Mounties tracked the stolen marijuana to a home in nearby Greenwood. Inside, RCMP say they found the pot secured with 19 sticks of dynamite hooked up to homemade fuses.

A surveillance system with a view of the front gate also guarded the residence.

Mounties say the dynamite -- believed to be from a mining operation -- was detonated safely.

James Douglas, 35, has been charged with possession of stolen property and explosives. A loaded shotgun, two rifles and a grenade were also found on the premises, say RCMP.

Mounties say they're still seeking two other suspects.

Charges have yet to be laid against the couple found on the Christina Lake property where the bears and marijuana garden were found. The potential destruction of the black bears due to their inability to adapt to wilderness feeding has sparked an international outcry to save them.

B.C. Environment Minister Barry Penner has said conservation officers could set up feeding stations to lure the bears back to the wild while weaning them from human handouts. A Facebook site set up by a Calgary woman has collected about 2,500 names on a petition pushing to save the bruins.
