Default Medical Marijuana Law A Success

Medical marijuana users say Rhode Island's law leaves gray areas, but they're content nonetheless.

State lawmakers this summer permanently extended a program allowing the chronically ill to possess and smoke marijuana for pain relief.

The program allows patients with cancer, AIDS and other debilitating illnesses to possess up to 12 marijuana plants and 2.5 usable ounces of the drug to ease their symptoms.

There are 302 patients enrolled in the program.

Gray areas exist. Patients are subject to arrest under federal law. Many patients also must buy marijuana from illegal dealers.

But they say the law is a good start.

Rhode Island became the 11th state in the country last year to
legalize marijuana for medical purposes.
