Highlights from last Tuesday's California primary election:
* In Humboldt, 215-friendly DA Paul Gallegos won an uncomfortably close re-election contest with 52.6% of the vote against Worth Dikeman. * MMJ-sympathetic candidates were elected in Hayward's mayor, city council, assembly and state senate district races. MMJ supporter Richard Valle fell just short in his challenge against indifferent incumbent Gail Steele for the Alameda Board of Supervisors. * Oaklanders are still awaiting the final returns in the mayor's race, where Ron Dellums, who is endorsed by Measure Z supporters, has just 80 votes more than the 50% needed to avoid a run-off with Ignacio De La Fuente, with several 1000 absentee ballots still to be counted. Even if he falls under 50%, Dellums is strongly positioned to win a run-off, since he is expected to pick up the bulk of the voters for 3rd-place finisher Nancy Nadel. In city council races, Measure Z supporter Desley Brooks won re-election to Dist. 6, while Measure Z supporter Aimee Allison forced a November runoff against Dist. 2 incumbent Pat Kernighan, a De La Fuente ally. * MMJ activist Kenneth White posted a respectable showing in his underdog race for San Bernardino Board of Supervisors, gathering 5,000 votes compared to 14,000 for the winner. * In San Diego, Prop 215 enemy Bill Horn narrowly won re-election to the Board of Supervisors. Long-time MJ decrim supporter Rep. Bob Filner survived a strong challenge by Juan Vargas. * In Orange County, 215-hostile Lou Correa won the Democratic nomination for State Senate. * In Torrance, MMJ supporter Jenny Oropeza beat hostile George Nakano for State Senate.
