Placer County sheriff's deputies found and removed more than 17,000 marijuana plants and chased a suspect carrying a rifle during an early morning raid on a grow site Wednesday.
Acting on an anonymous tip, investigators and the Special Enforcement Team discovered the illegal garden in the Gas Canyon area between Auburn and Foresthill on U.S. Forest Service public land, according to a sheriff's department report. A suspect was able to evade pursuers near the American River, but investigators recovered one rifle in the area. The plants ranged from 6 inches to 2 feet tall. It is believed the garden was tended by at least two workers, officials said. The public is urged to use caution when venturing off marked trails while hiking in the wilderness. As this case demonstrates, marijuana growers are often armed and pose a real threat to unwitting visitors to the area, officials said.
