Default Police Report First Drug Bust For 2008

The first major drug bust for 2008 was recorded earlier this week when the US Coast Guard confiscated 2,000 pounds of marijuana with a street value of more than $2 million, The Guardian was told on Friday.

According to Chief Supt. Raymond Gibson, officer in charge of crime on the Royal Bahamas Police Force, sometime around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Coast Guard Cutter "Venturess" stopped a 30-foot sailboat with a US flag some 25 miles southwest of Matthew Town, Inagua. Two persons - an American and a Bermudan national - were found on the vessel, and upon conducting a search, they discovered more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana, Gibson revealed.

"The suspects were arrested and they were taken to the United States to be processed," he said. "Information has been received that the drugs came from Jamaica and the boat was destined for the United States of America."

Between January and April 2007, police seized 496.35 pounds of cocaine, 1,537.79 pounds of marijuana and 191,218 marijuana plants, according to official police reports. Last September 2007 in Grand Bahama, 120 kilos of cocaine from Ecuador were seized at the Freeport Container Port with a street value of $3 million. The drugs were found in a 40-foot metal container that was positioned on the storage bay. While searching among a shipment of evaporated milk inside the container, two large black nylon bags were discovered, each containing 60 kilos of suspected cocaine in square, taped, plastic packages. Just three months before this find in June, a substantial amount of drugs, cash and weapons were found at a storage facility in Freeport. A sum in excess of $7 million in cash, 105 pounds of cocaine with a street value of $2million, 70 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $80,000 and $51,000 in counterfeit currency notes was discovered.

Back in the capital last July, DEU officers netted 2, 275 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $3 million. At the time, 50 packages of Indian Hemp were discovered on board a speedboat anchored some 15 miles south of New Providence. Weeks later the following month, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force recorded its largest drug bust for the year after they seized 510 pounds of marijuana, worth an estimated $700,000.
