Support North Dakota's Plan to License Hemp Farmers
Submit Written Comments on Proposed Rules by July 20, 2006
Tell North Dakota's Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson that you support his proposal to license farmers to grow industrial hemp. Vote Hemp wants to gather as much positive feedback as possible on the proposed hemp farming rules before the July 20th deadline for written comments.

Go to Vote Hemp's North Dakota page to read the proposed rules and submit your comments to Commissioner Johnson. And please remember to forward this email to others in North Dakota by clicking the "Forward email to a friend" link below.

North Dakota's proposed rules are an important step towards getting U.S. farmers involved in the lucrative and growing market for industrial hemp.

Note the following:

• Canada has planted over 40,000 acres of industrial hemp this year in an attempt to meet expanding demand for the nutritious and versatile plant in the United States, but rumors persist that shortages will force the industry to import seed from Europe or China.

• FlexForm Technologies, the Indiana-based manufacturer of bio-composites found in over 2.5 million vehicles in North America today, uses 250,000 pounds of hemp fiber per year. The company's natural fiber usage will double in 2007. A company spokesman says they could "easily" use more hemp and would "gladly" expand their domestic purchases.

• A byproduct of the thriving hemp seed and fiber industries, the woody core of the hemp plant is underutilized due to transportation costs. The core's use in animal bedding, biofuel, plastic, concrete, paper and other products would become more viable if hemp were grown domestically.

• Sales of hemp foods in 2004/2005 grew by 50% over the previous 12-month period. U.S. retail sales of hemp products are estimated to now be $250 to $300 million per year.
