Trindad - A blind man yesterday pleaded guilty to possession of 405 grammes of marijuana. But when the magistrate reviewed the evidence and said he believed the drug was going to be used for trafficking, the man denied the marijuana belonged to him.

Fifty-eight-year-old Gilbert Simmons said through his lawyer, Mewahlal Chatoor, that he boiled the stems of marijuana and used them to bring him relief from his renal problems. However, when Magistrate Melvin Daniel described the drugs as being packaged into exact amounts, in 106 transparent packets and 100 foil packets, Simmons told Chatoor said he presumed the evidence, which was in a black bag, contained the stem of the marijuana plant. He said the evidence which was being tendered did not belong to his client.

Simmons, of Union Park, Marabella, was charged by PC Cliff Legendre, along with two other people close to his home last Thursday. Simmons had no previous convictions and was granted bail, with a surety, of $250,000. He was also told to report to the Marabella Police Station every Friday between 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
