Default Another Ganja Seizure In City

NAGPUR - Sleuths from the crime branch nabbed a peddler from Hyderabad and seized around six kilograms of good quality ganja or marijuana from his possession on Saturday afternoon.

The crime branch team claimed that the ganja was supposed to be delivered to various destinations in and around Vidarbha including Kanhan, Kamptee and the city. The ganja syndicate from Andhra Pradesh, which has a potential clientele in Vidarbha other than Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, has been a major headache for the government security agencies. Recently, government railway police had seized around 25 kg of high quality ganja from two persons, who had fetched the contraband drug from Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh and were taking it to Bhilai in Chhattisgarh.

The team from Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) wing of crime branch had reportedly laid a trap near Ajni railway station from where the accused was finally nabbed. Crime branch arrested Mohammed Arshad Lal Mohammed, nearly 28, after he reached Ajni by the Vijaywada Nagpur passenger on Monday afternoon. PI Sunil Bonde said at least two more persons accompanying Arshad managed to slip away with some more consignment after the accused was held. "Police will not spare the ones who have slipped away. The search will continue. We are already using our technical knowledge to nab them," claimed PI Bonde.

The police team has reportedly seized a mobile phone from the accused. The ganja is worth around Rs 18,000 in the local market. Accused Arshad was reportedly involved in drug peddling since one year after found the job as a 'carrier agent' more gainful than his work as a caterer boy where he earned Rs 120 per day. "He was paid Rs 600 per trip for drug peddling," added PI Bonde.

"We were already waiting outside the railway station after getting prior intimation. Actually, we were expecting a bigger haul," said B K Upadhyay, additional commissioner of police, crime. Upadhyay claimed that relentless action against the drug syndicate has prompted them to change the route. "Nowadays, the peddlers from Andhra Pradesh are trying to avoid the route via Nagpur to reach Seoni. They are reportedly routing their material through Orissa," claimed Upadhyay. "Already having aborted the idea to deliver the drug via Nagpur, the peddlers from Andhra Pradesh were merely on a test run this time. It seems that they were testing our capability," added Upadhyay.
