Marijuana plants with a potential value of more than $100 million were seized in May in the mountain regions of Kern County, sheriff’s deputies reported.
Four persons, including one with a handgun stolen from an off-duty law enforcement officer’s vehicle, were arrested, deputies said. All four had loaded handguns, deputies said. The four were taken into custody in connection with the May 1 seizure of 24,920 immature plants seized in the Twin Oaks area, deputies said. At maturity, those plants would have a street value of $62 million, deputies said. The four arrested on marijuana cultivation, conspiracy and firearms charges are Martel Mora Rodriguez, 54, of Modesto, Jorge Gomez Galvan, 20, of Orange Cove, Petro Avina Mendoza, 44, of Manteca, and Irieno Galvan Gomez, 25 of Las Vegas, deputies said. Deputies also seized 13,390 immature marijuana plants May 8 in the Bright Star mountain range in eastern Kern County. At maturity, these plants would have a street value of more than $33 million, deputies said. On May 22, deputies seized 4,326 immature marijuana plants in the Alta Sierra mountain range. Those plants at maturity would have a street value of more than $10 million, deputies said.
