Default Marijuana Crop Thrives; Lawmen Make Big Hauls

This summer’s hot, rainy weather has apparently been good for the local marijuana crop, according to Williams County Sheriff Kevin Beck, who said 1,400 plants, worth $175,000 on the street, have been pulled and confiscated in his county this season.

That’s the most in at least five years in Williams County, according to Sheriff Beck, and far more than has been pulled in nearby counties. Putnam County authorities pulled 360 plants and Fulton County officials pulled 172, according to the Multi-Area Narcotics Task Force. Statistics from Defiance and Henry counties, which are part of the same group, were not available yesterday.

The latest find in Williams was Wednesday, when officials found 200 large plants under cultivation at a home in the northern part of the county, the result of an anonymous tip.

The finds remain under investigation and charges are expected, the sheriff’s office said.
