Almost $10 million dollars worth of marijuana won't make it to the streets.
Officials in Elmore County busted a “significant grow” Thursday along Rattlesnake Creek, north of Prairie. More than 4,800 plants were ripped out and torched in a big fire pit. “We have nowhere to store it. It's too bulky,” said Elmore County Sheriff Rick Layher. He said burying isn't an option because the risk someone may unearth it is too high. Elmore County, the DEA, Fish and Game, and the Forest Service had been keeping an eye on the area for three weeks after getting tipped off by some fishermen. Officers swooped in, surrounded the area, and arrested 31-year-old Antelmo Romeres and 29-year-old Sigfiedo Lopez Garcia, men they say were packing guns. Helicopters flew in to carry the marijuana out. The plants were about 3 to 4 feet high and not quite ready for harvest. Layher says in another month or two, they'd be worth almost $10 million dollars. “This would not have been possible without as much help as we had,” he said.
