Wim Moorlag lives with his wife Klasiena in a little town in the north of the Netherlands. Their lawn is neatly mown, from the back garden you can see cows grazing in the adjoining field and apple trees blow gently in the summer breeze. And there are four cannabis plants in pots in the bottom right hand corner of the garden.
These four plants are a protest. Under Dutch law people are allowed to grow a maximum of three plants but Wim needs more. A lot more. He suffers from multiple sclerosis and for the past twelve years he's been smoking cannabis to help relieve some of his symptoms. "If I don't have it I'm tired much more, I don't walk as much as I can now. Everything goes better with the cannabis." For the majority of those years he was growing his own. He says that it's by far the best and the purest and helps the most with his symptoms. Medical cannabis has been sterilised and the cannabis you buy in shops is contaminated with chemicals. It's also a lot cheaper. Homegrown plants However, four years ago the police came and took all his homegrown plants away, and ever since the Moorlags have been battling in the courts to have the right to grow their own. They have been treated leniently in the local courts but they're taking it to a higher court to have the right to grow what they want. Mr Moorlag says: "I want to use it whatever anyone says. It's the principle for me. I'm a human being here on this earth between all these plants and I always say that nature gave me multiple sclerosis and it is nature that gave us the plants. I'm glad with this nature." Of course, it is a very sensitive political issue, not only in the Netherlands but across the world, and if the Moorlags win, it will have serious repercussions. For this reason, the verdict has been delayed numerous times. It's now expected within the next few weeks. http://www.420magazine.com/forums/in...-pain-law.html |
