After posting bail on misdemeanor drug charges Wednesday, comedian Ron White said he tried to have two pizza deliveries made: one for the Indian River County Jail and the other for the Vero Beach Police Department.

"It's not very often something like this happens," sheriff's Lt. Selby Strickland said about someone sending food to the jail after being processed.

But Strickland confirmed jail staff accepted six pizzas three hours after White had been booked and released. He said per the Sheriff's Office policy, there was nothing improper about accepting the pizza.

The delivery person specified the pies were compliments of the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" star, Strickland said.

"Our policy would allow us to accept food as a gift after our duties are completed," Strickland said. "Since our duties were done, there was nothing we could do to help him."

Vero Beach Police took White into custody Wednesday when his jet arrived at the Vero Beach Municipal Airport. Officers met White based on a tip from a confidential informant saying White would have drugs on him.

The author of "I Had the Right to Remain Silent ... But I Didn't Have the Ability" admitted to having the marijuana on him. Within two hour of being charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, White posted $1,000 bail and left the jail en route to the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce to perform in the first of two shows.

When he arrived, White asked someone from the promotional company to order pizzas for the Police Department and jail, said John Wilkes, Sunrise executive director. White said Thursday the pizzas were a "thank you" to the police officers and jail deputies for their professionalism.

"That would be a gratuity," Morrison said. And it's against policy, he added.

A representative for the promotion company, Live Nation, could not be reached for comment about why no delivery was made to the Police Department. Strickland said the jail's policy is to reject non-edible gifts such as cash, but food as a gift after someone has left the facility is not prohibited.

White continued his stand-up tour in Charleston, S.C., on Friday and was headed to Mississippi this weekend. Publicist Kathe Nelson said no court date has been scheduled yet for White on the drug charges.
