This article is about Proposal 1, Michigan's Medical Marijuana Initiative. Although the title and tactics could be said regarding McCain/Palin campaign for the Presidency.
It's simply how they campaign ... with deception, innuendo, and fear. I received this announcement in my e-mail today. I would like you to read the contents and discuss the issue it raises. We knew Proposal 1's opposition are liars; are they cheaters, too? This message from the Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care is being forwarded to MPP subscribers on the Yes on Proposal 1 campaign's behalf. Time and again throughout their desperate campaign, our opposition has lied. They've attempted to dupe voters into thinking Proposal 1 is something it's not, lied about the experience of other medical marijuana states, and aired an outrageously deceptive TV ad. At this point, the lies are coming so numerous they no longer surprise anyone. It's simply how they campaign ... with deception, innuendo, and fear. And now it turns out they may be cheaters, too. Under Michigan law, political campaigns have 48 hours to report any contribution of $200 or more from a single source. Based on their cash-on-hand as reported in publicly available campaign finance reports, their recent TV buy in select markets would have been impossible without a sudden influx of additional money. Yet no further contributions have been reported. There's only one plausible conclusion: By shielding their finances from public view in order to stay under the radar, the opposition is in clear and demonstrable violation of the law. So, to recap: They lie about the initiative, they lie about the patients, they air a television ad based on a lie ... and they break the law to air it. The irony here is impossible to miss. Bill Schuette, the most outspoken opponent of Proposal 1 and the opposition's spokesman, is a judge. It's his job to read laws. And, as a matter of fact, he has repeatedly claimed that this professional expertise gives him unique insight into why Proposal 1 should be rejected and Michigan should continue to threaten cancer and AIDS patients with the threat of arrest and jail for taking their doctor-recommended medicine. Yet he's unable to understand the crystal-clear demands of campaign finance law? MCCC has followed the letter of the law scrupulously. Our contributions and expenditures are public record, available for anyone to see, and we file our reports according to the timeline the state requires. We'd expect a committee spearheaded by a judge to manage the same. Apparently, that's asking too much. If you are outraged by the unrelenting indecency and outrageous deception our opponents have engaged in, you must work feverishly to pass Proposal 1 in these last 24 hours. Call your friends and family, e-mail your address book, activate your online social networks, print out some literature and distribute it widely, take tomorrow off and help get out the vote. It's clear these opponents will say or do anything to block Proposal 1 from passing. We can take nothing, nothing, for granted. This sort of insidious campaigning and outright deception cannot be allowed to stand. Voters deserve better ... as do the sick and suffering patients of Michigan whom the opposition slander and demean. Please exert all of your energy during this final push; we can make history tomorrow if you do. Why do people feel it is OK to LIE about issues rather than discuss our differences? http://www.420magazine.com/forums/in...endo-fear.html |
