A moratorium on prohibiting marijuana dispensaries in Coachella expires on Saturday.

City staff is preparing an ordinance that would altogether prohibit the dispensaries from locating to the city.

Once completed it would go before the Coachella Planning Commission and then the City Council for final approval.

The City Council on Monday met for a study session to discuss the matter and made the recommendation to staff to prepare the ordinance.

Coachella Mayor Eduardo Garcia said the decision to prohibit the dispensaries was made twofold: internally there is no capacity to administer, oversee and enforce those businesses; and uncertainty with state and federal law in regard to marijuana dispensaries.
