Attorney charged with taking marijuana to jail

An attorney took marijuana and rolling papers to an inmate he was visiting in jail, police said.

William Conway, 58, of Pittsburgh, was charged with possession and delivery of marijuana and related offenses on Friday.

Conway hid about an ounce of marijuana in documents he was delivering to his client at the county jail Friday, Allegheny County police said. He was arrested as he was leaving.

Conway was being held at the jail. A number at his law office would not accept a message.

The inmate, William Tate, 27, of Pittsburgh, was charged with similar offenses, police said.

Airman pleads guilty to marijuana use

An airman assigned to the 603rd Air Control Squadron pleaded guilty to marijuana use at a special court-martial last week.

Staff Sgt. Michael J. Federowski was sentenced to a reduction in rank to E-4, forfeiture of $100 monthly for a year and hard labor without jail for 90 days, according to a court document released by the 31st Fighter Wing public affairs office after the trial ended Wednesday.

'Cannabis' seized in raid by police

THOUSANDS of pounds worth of suspected cannabis plants were recovered when police raided a house.

Twenty plants worth around £20,000 were allegedly seized from a house in Blackhall after police raided the property following a tip-off.

Specialist heating and lighting equipment was also found in the property after police were alerted to the plants by a member of the public, said police.

Inspector Paul Harrison, of Peterlee Police, said they ''got some information that there was a cannabis farm''.

As a result, say police, they searched a property and recovered 20 plants.
"There was also lamps and heating equipment that had been set up to grow multiple plants," added Insp Harrison.

Police say the plants were of varying degrees of maturity, with several ready to be cropped.

Investigators say they are delighted with the find and urged anyone with information on people involved in illegal drugs to contact them.
Insp Harrison added: "This information was received from the local community and anyone who has any information in relation to drugs in communities they can let us know and we will act upon it very quickly and get results."

# A man in his early 30s was arrested and questioned at Peterlee Police Station and has been released on bail while the suspected cannabis plants are analysed.

Hemp hype

HEMP may be a first cousin to marijuana, but that's no reason to justify the continued ban on the useful plant.

Indeed, the association with the illegal weed has unfairly tainted hemp from being grown and harvested. That's why the bill by Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, to legalize the farming of this durable and sustainable crop ought to be supported by his colleagues. Long a cause for hippie types, hemp has gained popularity as a lucrative crop for fiber.

There was never a very strong reason to ban hemp, other than that the plant looked a lot like marijuana. At a time when we need renewable resources, there's even less reason.
