The San Diego county board of supervisors vote today on whether to put a hold on medical marijuana dispensaries.

Supervisors are expected to approve a staff recommendation that the county wait at least 45 days before any dispensaries are permitted in unincorporated parts of the county.

By doing so, the county board would join National City and Chula Vista in passing moratoriums on the dispensaries. County land-use staffers say they need more time determine what regulations should be applied to the new businesses.

State law says dispensaries must be non-profit collectives that only provide marijuana to doctor-approved patients. San Diego county legally challenged California law that allows the use of medical marijuana. But in May, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear its case. Since then, the county health department has begun to issue ID cards to people, showing they have a doctor's recommendation to use marijuana.
