Since I began writing this column, I have advocated that the GOP be much more aggressive in how it confronts its political opposition. It should use messages that are more visceral and emotional in nature. I believe that messages shaped this way would be much more effective in confronting the raw ridicule that now emanates from the political left, and in any case, what has the RNC got to lose in the attempt?
In this vein, I beseech the GOP to begin the work needed to legalize marijuana at the federal level. I believe that this action would send a resounding and positive message about the GOP to the electorate, and that it would strike at the core of the liberal political message. Far more, it would save a ton of money, and it is simply the right thing to do. Many people advocate the legalization of all drugs, and there is much to be considered in that. Perhaps lengthy discussion and debate about that issue is worthwhile. Consider the legalization of all drugs as you wish. However, one thing is certain: marijuana should be legalized now, right now, and no further discussion or debate is needed. All arguments against marijuana legalization are flimsy; the arguments for legalization are myriad and overwhelming. The only possible real objection could be that now is not the right time. On the contrary, for maximum effect on the current political debate, now would be the perfect time to start this legislative fight. It would confound observers, engender tremendous media coverage, and could derail the opposition's current legislative agenda. There simply is no downside. Evidence supporting the legalization of marijuana is everywhere. Let me reiterate a few facts-- The following public figures have admitted to smoking marijuana: Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, Justice Clarence Thomas, Speaker Newt Gingrich, William F. Buckley, and many others. If asked, I suspect that at least half of House representatives would admit as much. Shall we arrest them now? Surveys on marijuana use show that at least 45 million US citizens now smoke or have smoked marijuana sometime in the past. Shall we arrest them too, and please tell me where should they be incarcerated? Montana? Each year, the US spends approximately $10 billion on enforcement and imprisoning marijuana users, and forgoes another $10 billon in taxes. Legalization would cause a huge windfall of federal cash that could be put to a more productive use. The feds put Tommy Chong in a federal pen for his involvement in selling bongs. Of all people, Tommy Chong? Are you out of your minds? What hypocrites are we to criminalize pot but give a free ride to booze? When our children find out what idiots we are, how do we explain it to them? Yes, son, but we are telling the truth about everything else? Please forgive my sarcasm, but didn't we try this insanity once before? The legislation would be a cinch to implement-- All federal legislation that governs "alcohol" will be construed to read "alcohol and marijuana" Records of marijuana use by individuals will be purged from all federal records, and until purged will be construed to be purged All federal agencies will cease marijuana testing for individuals except where alcohol testing is also warranted There you are: illegal substance law made rational, and a killer political issue with which to bludgeon the opposition. I can't wait to watch the floor debate. Let's get busy! http://www.420magazine.com/forums/in...juana-now.html |
