A Sydney man who found and kept more than 6.5 kilograms of marijuana in far north Queensland has escaped a jail sentence.
The Cairns Supreme Court heard 41-year-old Dominic Michael Quinn was trying to find a fishing spot along the banks of the Endeavour River at Cooktown last year when he found the marijuana on the ground. He stashed the drugs in the back of his ute and drove back to Cairns. Several months later, police noticed a small quantity of the drug in Quinn's vehicle during a random breath test. Quinn admitted he had more of the drug at home. In sentencing, Justice Stanley Jones took into account Quinn had not sold or shared the drug and only used a small portion for himself. He sentenced Quinn to 120 hours of community service.
