About dinnertime last Saturday, strangers driving through a Whetstone resident property abandoned 1,200 pounds of marijuana and a pickup reported stolen by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

The man who lives at 2136 Cooke Ranch Drive called the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office at 6:10 p.m., and Border Alliance Group deputies went to look at the evidence, sheriff’s spokeswoman Carol Capas said.

The vehicle was a white 2004 model Ford half-ton pickup, with a bed covered by a piece of plywood. When deputies opened the tailgate, they found many bundles of marijuana wrapped with “shrink wrap,” Capas said.

“Also inside of the cab were additional bundles of marijuana and two cowboy hats,” she said.

The resident told deputies he tried to make contact with the people in the pickup, but the people fled.

The truck’s occupants stopped the vehicle when it came to a barbed-wire fence, and “both exited, jumping over the barbed-wire fence and running east.”

The Sheriff’s Office has not caught them, and the investigation continues. The resident described the suspects as white men in their early 30s.

At about 9 p.m. last Saturday, another suspicious vehicle appeared, this time a silver vehicle, possibly a Kia. The resident said that when he asked them what they were doing, they said they were lost, Capas said. He said they looked like the same two people as before, except this time they were wearing baseball caps.

The resident wanted the suspects to know police have the marijuana and the vehicle in hopes they would not come back.
