Default Medical Marijuana Clinic Could Come to Gilroy

GILROY, Calif. - On Monday night, the Gilroy City Council will review a controversial ordinance to allow a medical marijuana clinic to exist in the city. This idea does not sit well with some people who live and/or work nearby.

It's been in the works since May. That's when a legal business application was filed for this medical marijuana facility. On one hand, some say, it could help a lot of people for medical reasons. Others fear it could jeopardize their safety.

Some are concerned it could increase crime and they're worried it will be used for recreational use, rather than its intended purpose to help people with their ailments.

"I don't want it here in Gilroy until the state can give clear guidelines to the doctors and the proper ailments they could recommend it for," says Ron Kirkish.

"This is a fragile neighborhood down here," says Bob Cooke. "This part of Gilroy is having a hard time getting a leg up. There's crime all around this area. We don't need children exposed to this problem in their neighborhood."

Dr. Maureen Miner runs a physical rehabilitation center across the street. She's worried that the type of patients who receive this type of medical marijuana may interfere with her business and would put her patients with disabilities at risk. So much so, that she's willing to leave.

"I would leave," says Miner. "I will do what I need to do to take care of my patients and my staff and our safety. If it comes to the decision of if I have to move from my present location, I will have to do that yes."

She admits, that when medical marijuana is prescribed properly, it does work well, but she doesn't understand why a clinic needs to come to Gilroy. She along with others will be at the council meeting to voice their concerns.

KION contacted the city council members via email. Those that got back to us did not say if they were either for or against this idea, but said, they would have a better opinion after the city council meeting. Law enforcement is also expected to give a report.
