RALEIGH -- A tray of brownies and a cake of creamy butter does not typically make for criminal arrests.
But things can go rather badly in the kitchen if the cook is using an illegal drug to prepare the meal. According to court records made public Friday, police walked into a North Raleigh apartment this month and found a stash of marijuana brownies and a cake of butter that was also stoked with cannabis. Two men have been charged: Adam Lee Mariol, 31, of 6804 Chesterbrook Court in Raleigh, with one felony count of maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance. The second man, Richard Michael Rhodes, 19, of the same address, was charged with one felony count each of possession of marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance, according to records filed at the City-County Bureau of Identification. Police have accused the two men of harboring 950 grams of marijuana brownies, 510 grams of marijuana butter, 22 grams of uncooked reefer, digital scales and about $348 in cash, according to a search warrant application at the Wake County Clerk of Courts Office. Marijuana brownies have been around at least as long as 1960s psychedelic music, but marijuana butter appears to be a recent phenomenon. Web sites declare that reefer butter is prepared by placing the marijuana in a small pot of water and butter. The water, which is slowly boiled, should barely cover the bud. After the water has boiled away, the remaining substance is poured through a strainer or cloth into a jar. The substance that cools and forms is called marijuana butter, and it can be used in cake recipes or atop warm breads, like brownies. Informant's tip On Oct. 11, D.A. Jones, a senior officer with Raleigh police, received a tip from a confidential informant who discovered marijuana sales at the Cambridge apartment complex in the 6800 block of Chesterbrook Court, court records show. The informant then purchased "a large quantity" of marijuana from the apartment to corroborate his claims that someone was dealing drugs from the third floor apartment off Six Forks Road, Jones reported. On Oct. 14, investigators obtained a search warrant and seized brownies loaded into a gallon-size plastic bag and butter clumped in a Mason jar, court records show. Rhodes was released the same day after posting a $6,000 bond, a jail spokesman said. Mariol was released two days later, on Oct. 16, after posting a $5,000 bond, the spokesman said. http://www.420magazine.com/forums/in...-brownies.html |
