SACRAMENTO, Calif.—One man is dead and another hospitalized with serious injuries after a home-invasion theft of marijuana Saturday in Nevada County ended with a car crash.

Sheriff Keith Royal has not released the names of either the suspects or the victims in the 10 a.m. incident near the hamlet of North San Juan.

Royal said two gunmen in ski masks broke into the residence while claiming to be law enforcement officers. They handcuffed four people inside, then ran out with an undetermined number of pounds of marijuana.

One victim freed himself and chased the gunmen southbound on Highway 49, where the pickup carrying the gunmen crashed into a tree, killing the driver.

The passenger was flown to a nearby hospital.

Royal said there is "a large contingency" of people growing marijuana in the area.

The investigation is ongoing.
