An Associated Press questionnaire that was released this past weekend has forced Governor candidates to take a position in the debate on medical cannabis.

Illinois Green Party candidate Rich Whitney told the AP that he supports full legalization but none of the Republican or Democratic candidates went that far. Republican candidates Andrew Andrzejewski, Jim Ryan and Dan Proft all stated that they would likely sign a medical cannabis bill if it made it to their desks.

Current Illinois Governor Pat Quinn was quoted as saying "In general, I believe that people who are seriously ill deserve access to all medical treatments that will help them." Quinn faces Dan Hynes in the primary election and Hynes’ stance is that he opposes medical cannabis in Illinois.

Dan Linn, Executive Director with Illinois NORML, said, "As voters take to the ballot box February 2nd it is important to know where each candidate stands on the issue and we hope that voters will take this information with them when selecting a Governor candidate."

Illinois NORML is pleased that the Illinois Senate approved our medical cannabis bill last May, Linn said, "however, we are anxiously awaiting a vote from the Illinois House of Representatives."

He says it is crucial that supporters of reforming cannabis laws in Illinois contact their State Representative and urge them to vote yes on Senate Bill 1381.

"We have been meeting with State Representatives in their districts with medical cannabis patients and advocates and these legislators continue to tell us that they need to hear from their constituents in order to support this legislation. Please take a few moments today to contact your State Representative and voice your support for medical cannabis in Illinois by calling 217-782-2000 and asking to be connected to your State Representative's office. It is also very important to contact their district office as well."

Illinois NORML has high hopes for 2010.
