Sanjaya's bad singing and interesting and ever changing hairdo's could be a result of his childhood - growing up in a pot house.

While there is no direct connection between the two, the National Enquirer newspaper has reportedly learned that the "American Idol" contestant was raised by a marijuana-growing mother.

The tabloid has discovered, via legal documents, that Mrs. Sanjaya, Jillian Blyth, was arrested after police found 310 'pot plants' in her home in 2005. She then spent a month in jail - a good deal less than the five year maximum sentence.

News that Sanjaya's mother was a drug dealer come at the same time that he has revealed he knows how to treat women because he was raised by them.

Although many in the media have pegged the 17-year-old 'singer' as a new homosexual star, Sanjaya insists that he is straight and just very, very understanding to what women want.

He told PEOPLE, "I've always gotten along with girls better because I was raised by women. I got teased in school because people figured I must be gay because I understand women."

The wanna-be star's popularity while on "Idol" was possibly a result of both male and female fans, but Sanjaya says that hasn't always been the case.

He continued, "I think that's why guys didn't like me - because I got along with girls so well. When I went up to girls they would give me a hug and a kiss on the cheek like I was their gay friend. But I was the straight guy that understood them."

Sanjaya even had a girlfriend before finding his 15 minutes of fame.

He revealed, "I had a girlfriend but she became clingy, and I didn't want to get into a really serious relationship because I was 16. I just wanted to date and have fun."

After being raised by a woman like that, prospective dates should probably refrain from sending flowers as gifts.
