While about 14 different states have already legalized marijuana for medicinal use, Oklahoma still has not done so.
And according to State Rep. Mike Brown and State Sen. Jim Wilson, the situation isn’t likely to change anytime soon – if ever. “I don’t ever see it happening,” Brown said. “I just can’t see it being done without enough support from the medical community.” Brown pointed out how long it took to legalize tattooing in Oklahoma. “It took three or four years of hammering on that to get it passed,” he said. Advocates point to a mixture of conservative values and religious beliefs that would prevent the issue from moving to the fore. Still, what people say in public and what they think in private are considerably different when it comes to marijuana. According to an online poll conducted by the Press, more than 40 percent of the nearly 100 respondents said they would like to see marijuana legalized for both medicinal and recreational purposes. More than 20 percent of respondents said they would like to see the herb legalized for medicinal purposes, and 20 percent said they would like to see it used only for terminal or very serious illnesses. Only 19 percent of the respondents said they are opposed to any type of legalization for cannabis in the state of Oklahoma. Most states that have legalized medicinal marijuana have done so through an initiative petition. This is where it goes past the Legislature at the will of the people. “I don’t think it’s possible to legalize it here,” Wilson said. “The only way it could be legalized is through an initiative petition, because you can’t get the Legislature to do it.” Wilson said he has been surprised to see so many states legalizing its use. New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine just signed a law there Jan. 18, making his state the latest in a string of states allowing cannabis. “Oklahoma has been experimenting with industrial hemp,” he said. “But that’s not marijuana. I don’t think we look at things scientifically enough; the votes are more emotional. You would think as grown adults we could sit down and discuss things logically, but you can’t anymore.” http://www.420magazine.com/forums/in...bably-not.html |
