India: Many sadhus and their devotees participating in Mahashivratri festival on Thursday are going to be high on dope, as a large cache of contraband drugs including 800 kg bhang (cannabis) leaves, 100 kg ganja (marijuana) along with some kg of charas (extract of the cannabis plant) found its way to Junagadh, if sources are to be believed.

"Bhang and ganja are generally consumed by sadhus and also hot favourite among foreign tourists who specially visit Junagadh during Mahashivratri festival to indulge in doping. Ganja and charas are mostly sought after by sadhus from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, while bhang enjoys its popularity among naga bawas of Gujarat," said a source.

"Preparation of bhang is lengthy. Using mortar and a pestle, the buds and leaves of cannabis are ground into a green paste. To this mixture milk, ghee and spices are added. In order to make it more strong, bhang is kept in copper utensils. Such is the popularity of this intoxicant that a sadhu in Girnar has procured 20 sacks of bhang," the source said.

Meanwhile, preparations for Mahashivratri are in full swing. However, compared to last year, there are less number of devotees witnessed this year. "As if inadequate monsoon and inflation have affected them, less number of devotees have turned up for the festival this year. Last year, about three lakhs devotees had visited Junagadh for Mahashivratri, while this time only 1.50 lakh have arrived," said an official from Junagadh district administration.

Sadhus with their Akhadas (groups) form one of the major attractions in this festival. Famous akhadas include naga bawas (naked sadhus) and Juna Akhada of Panch Dasha led by Saint Atmanandgiri. Mahant Jaigiri from Uttar Pradeshs has become cynosure of all eyes with his 11-feet-long beard.
