Investigators with the Metro Drug Unit say two Honduran men were hauling more than 100 pounds of marijuana from North Carolina when they were involved in a single-vehicle crash.
Lt. A.C. Napier of the drug unit said Charleston officers arrested Jary Vasquez Vasquez, 35, and Andres Meija Fuentes, 53, both of Charlotte, N.C., and originally from Honduras, after they fled the scene of the crash. Authorities said they believed the two men were in the country illegally. The crash occurred about 1:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 64-77 near the Greenbrier Street exit. Sgt. Shawn Williams of the Charleston traffic division said the interstate was reportedly snowy and icy, causing the Toyota 4Runner the pair had been traveling in to slide off the roadway. Police have not yet determined who was driving the vehicle. Charleston firefighters and medics arrived at the scene and found the marijuana covered up on the side of the road and the two men attempting to flee on foot. "They removed the marijuana from the vehicle, put it on the side of the road and put a blanket over it," Napier said of the men. "They were panicking." Charleston police officers found one man hiding in bushes and the other was found walking along Greenbrier Street, Napier said. Detectives were able to determine that the six bales of marijuana weighed 124 pounds and could have sold for $186,000 to $500,000, depending on how it was broken up and the quality of the marijuana, Napier said. "At this point, we don't know where they were going with it, whether it was going to stay here or be sold elsewhere up north," Napier said. The detective said the two men spoke broken English and once they realized they were in trouble, they stopped speaking English altogether. Vasquez and Fuentes were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and are being held at South Central Regional Jail. The bond for the possession charge was set at $15,000 property or 10 percent cash; however, a booking officer at the regional jail said the pair were in the United States illegally and were being detained for immigration purposes. Detectives in the drug unit are still investigating. http://www.420magazine.com/forums/in...ounds-pot.html |
