San Francisco - Politics is easy. You just have to find the right issue.
Conventional wisdom says the Sunset is full of quiet, politically uninterested families who mind their own business. That's true, right up until a plan to put a medical cannabis dispensary on Taraval was announced. Supervisor Carmen Chu's office has already entered 1,698 letters and e-mails in their database, with another two large manila envelopes full of correspondence yet to be counted. Responses are running 100 to 1 against. "The groundswell among individuals in the neighborhood has been quite overwhelming," Chu said. "The Sunset might be seen as a sleepy little town, but when it is an issue that affects them, the community stands up." Technically, the dispensary is outside the legal limit - more than 1,000 feet away from a school. But it would be near Lincoln High School and other children's facilities. It would also be on the route of the L Taraval, a major light rail route. A Planning Commission hearing is set for May 20, and a raucous turnout of fired-up residents is expected. They may never call them sleepy again. http://www.420magazine.com/forums/in...ispensary.html |
