Aston Township commissioners unanimously adopted an ordinance at a Wednesday night meeting that would allow a medical marijuana-processing facility to located in the southwestern Delaware County municipality.

The facility must be in an industrial district, at least 1,000 feet from a school or daycare center, and housed in a secure structure not accessible to minors, according to the newly amended zoning ordinance. The building can not have any visual signs that a medical marijuana facility is located on the premises, the Delaware County Times reported.

The measure received support from those in attendance, the paper reported.

Not only am I proud of the board for being so progressive, I am also proud of the residents because I came here tonight expecting this to be a battle and I see this is a community that cares," Michelle Saunders told the paper. Saunders said she had a relative in another state who benefited from the drug.

Commissioners Vice President Mike Higgins said last week the municipality was approached by an individual interested in locating a medical marijuana facility in the township. The township has not released the individual’s names saying the state permits have yet to be approved, as the process is still in the very early stages, the paper reported.
