Downtown Bellingham is getting its first pot shop. Satori, located at 100 East Maple St. is set to open later this month.
“You won’t see any other marijuana stores downtown,” owner Quinn Sharpe said.

The store is in one of the few spots downtown that is zoned correctly, and is also far enough away from parks, schools and other community centers.

There are already two other Satori locations in Washington, one in Spokane and one in Pullman.

Sharpe and one of his business partners entered marijuana retail from the headshop world. They run Piece of Mind, which will soon open its 14th location, and are spread across five states.

Sharpe lives in Bellingham, graduated from Western Washington University and is looking forward to being able to stay in town more.

He applied for the marijuana license in fall of last year, as soon as the state started accepting new applications as part of the process to integrate the recreational shops with the medical dispensaries. One of Sharpe’s business partners has experience in the medical marijuana industry, which he said helped him snag one of the newly available licenses.

The store will have 2,000 square feet of retail space. Sharpe even got four dedicated parking spots for customers in the nearby parking lot.

Adjacent to the retail space is a private consulting space for medical marijuana patients. Sharpe said they’ll have certified medical marijuana consultants on staff, and anyone seeking medical products will be able to schedule a consult and talk privately with one of them. The shop is in an old foundry building, across the street from Boundary Bay Brewing and next door to the recently opened Gruff Brewing Co. The building was built in 1893, and was originally where the patterns were created to make molds to cast molten metal.

Sharpe wants to reflect the building’s history in the design of the shop. He found some of the old patterns that used to be produced in the shop in the crawlspace below the building.

He plans to display them in the shop.
